Improving the breakoff

The briefed altitude is where breakoff starts. What separates a group is everything after it: cease work, turn to heading, track, clear the air, deploy. Here is how each part is trained.

Ask a new freeflyer about breakoff and you usually get a number. Ask an experienced one and you get a sequence: cease work, turn to your assigned heading, track with intent, wash off vertical speed, clear the airspace above, below and behind, and deploy into clean air. The number is where it starts. The skill is everything after.

The guides

These are recommendations, adjusted for skill level, group size and conditions. They are a starting point for the jump brief, and a conservative one is cheap insurance.

  • Freefly groups up to a 4-way: a guide of at least 5,000 ft.
  • Five or more: at least 5,500 ft.
  • In practice, most modern jumpers plan 5,500 ft for any freefly group and will generally not accept 4,500 ft. The 4,500 ft figure survives in the published guides as a bare educational minimum; nobody should be planning on it.
  • Separation should be complete at least 1,000 ft above planned deployment. In Australia this margin is a regulatory floor in the APF Operational Regulations, and it is good practice everywhere.

Head-up work sits higher: a minimum around 5,500 ft, then 6,000 ft for six or more, with 10-way-plus treated as advanced flying where the jump leader owns the risk decision and should consider going higher.

Why head-up needs more altitude

This is the part that surprises people, and the evidence is unusually clear. GPS data gathered by Jake Carlton shows that a head-up breakoff buys far less separation than a head-down track. In a modelled 6-way, a head-up breakoff produced roughly 268 ft of separation and about 1.4 seconds of reaction time, against roughly 901 ft and 6.1 seconds for the same flyers breaking off head-first.

Three things stack up against the head-up track: less horizontal power, no glide-ratio gain moving into the track, and altitude spent rotating from head-up to head-down before the track even builds.

Carlton’s data drives an orientation rule as well as an altitude one: in a group of six or more, a head-up breakoff cannot buy the separation you need, so flyers should be head-first by roughly 6,500–7,000 ft. Read the two rules together. The altitude floor is when head-up work ends; by 6,500–7,000 ft you should already be head-first and tracking.

A 6,000 ft floor is never permission to stay head-up below the head-first window.

The skill, unpacked

A number gets you nothing if the execution is loose. The sequence that separates a group:

  1. Break off on time, unprompted. At the briefed altitude, or on the group’s first breakoff movement, whichever comes first. Waiting to be told is itself a fault.
  2. Turn to your assigned heading. A fan-out radial in a group, or 90° from jump run in a small one. Never track across another flyer’s lane.
  3. Track with intent, then wash off vertical speed. A track that stays fast and steep buys nothing and drives you into other people’s air.
  4. Clear airspace above, below and behind before you deploy. Use a barrel-roll check only if it is smooth and reliable for you; at big-way scale, a clean back-to-belly transition keeps your eyes on the airspace the whole way through, which a barrel roll at deployment height cannot.
  5. Deploy into clean air. Never above a populated formation or another group. If you find yourself directly above someone at breakoff height and it is safe to deploy, deploy. Trying to out-track them loses the race and the altitude.

The takeaway

Set the number conservatively, then treat everything after it as the skill it is. The dive ends at the ground for everyone on the load, which is why breakoff is trained and assessed on every jump in this curriculum rather than bolted on at the end.
