The vertical recovery position
Back-fly is the recovery position for every vertical orientation. A genuinely wide back-fly range is what lets a flyer fail safely from a sit or a head-down, hold a heading, and re-establish without corking.

Every vertical orientation has the same answer to trouble. When a sit falls apart, when a head-down loses its line, when a flyer is bumped off balance at speed, the trained response is to recover to the back. Back-fly is the vertical recovery position, and building a wide, reliable one is the first real foundation in freefly.
What the position is
The recovery position is back to earth, feet close together, knees drawn toward the chest, arms out to the sides and slightly back. Some coaches describe it as a back-to-earth modified sit. Held well, it is stable, on a known heading, and falling at a controllable speed. From there a flyer can settle, check altitude, look for other people, and re-establish the orientation they lost.
The point is to recover without corking. A cork is a sudden drop in fall rate relative to the people around you, and it is the freefly hazard that turns a personal loss of control into a group problem. Recovering to the back holds a freefly fall rate instead of decelerating hard toward belly speed, which keeps the flyer roughly where the rest of the group expects them to be while they sort themselves out.
Why it is built first
Because back-fly has to catch a recovery from any vertical speed, its usable range needs to be wide. A back-fly that only works at one fall rate is not yet a recovery position.
That is why the early jumps ask for so much of it: hold a heading and stay on level for a sustained count, turn 360 degrees each way and stop on the spot, then hold level across a moving fall-rate range while a coach works up and down through belly, fast-knees and sit-fly speeds.
Rehearsing the shape until it is available without thought is part of the standard. A common approach is a set of ground holds with eyes open and a set with eyes closed, so the position arrives as a reflex at 200 kilometres per hour.
Back-fly is a genuine foundation. The de-arch a flyer uses to speed up on the back is close to the shape the body passes through on the way to vertical, and it transfers straight into head-up carving and into the head-down recovery-and-re-establish sequence.
Historically the progression has been framed as belly, then back-fly, then sit, then head-down, per the Australian Skydiver Magazine (ASM 73), and that ordering still holds.
Recovering in the air
The flyer adopts the recovery position the moment control is lost, or on a coach’s briefed signal, and resumes work only once stable. A soloist should drill the short sequence: return to back-fly, rotate ninety degrees, transition again, then resume. That static turn keeps them in their own column of air while they rebuild.
The reflex matters most where the speeds are highest. In head-down, the usual solo recovery is to bail to the back, settle, and only then re-establish vertical. A flyer who owns that reflex arrives at the fast end of freefly already able to fail safely, which is why head-up and back-fly come before head-down in mainstream progressions.

Treat back-fly as the position that makes everything above it survivable. Build the range wide, make the shape a reflex, and every faster orientation inherits a safe way to fail.
